Accidental tomato mix-up closes Clinton Highway market for two days

Posted on January 6, 2003 by Bjorn Knoxley

An embarrassing mix-up forced the closure of Pappy’s Market on Clinton Highway for almost two full business days, amounting to a loss of income of nearly $75 for the store’s owner.

It appears that other locally grown tomatoes were somehow mixed with the much sought after Grainger County tomatoes. Several hours passed between the mix-up and the time that the problem was first discovered.

According to Pappy, several regular customers showed up with half-eaten tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches that they simply couldn’t finish due to the disappointment of not tasting an official Grainger County tomato. After two days of careful sorting and some tasting for verification, Pappy has now reopened the market and now offers a full guarantee of tomato quality and offers special ‘high-end’ tomatoes with a pedigree.
