Maryville college eliminates desks to reduce usage of wood and plastic

Posted on August 29, 2008August 29, 2008 by Brehd Patchley

Maryville College’s student body is in for several changes this fall, as environmental initiatives expand. As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, one of the first steps in this initiative was to remove trays from the dining area to cut waste. The biggest change yet, announced this morning, is the elimination of all desks from classrooms to reduce the usage of wood and plastics.

“This will have multiple positive impacts,” states the Maryville College’s Student Government Association president. “Not only will less wood and plastic be used, but this will greatly help with attentiveness during classes. If students have to stand, they’ll not be as likely to nod off. Also, this should bring the student population together as they lean upon one another when tired.”
