Oak Ridge narrowly dodges Target

Posted on June 18, 2011June 18, 2011 by Brehd Patchley

Another Target is being built in the region, but thanks to the forward-thinking officials in Oak Ridge, they’ve managed to dodge that bullet yet again.

According to Tom Beehan, Mayor of Oak Ridge, “If Oak Ridgers wanted a Target, they’d clearly live in Knoxville or Minnesota. Plus we don’t want to compete with our thriving Oak Ridge Mall. We put up signs about new mall renovations about 6 years ago, and we don’t want to throw out perfectly good signs.”

The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce admits that Target could keep some tax dollars in the area, but other shopping outlets are more suitable for Oak Ridge. According to a statement from the Chamber, they’re aggressively pursuing a new Battery Superstore and a new Discount Cigarette Superstore.
