Quest for Mountain Dew slushies

Posted on December 20, 2004 by Bjorn Knoxley

It recently came to my attention that I have a tendency to drive out of my way to get a gigantic frozen Mountain Dew (aka Mountain Dew slushie). Over several discussions lately with Daisy-Mae, we realized we only knew of a couple places that actually sell the things.

So, with your help and as a public service, I want to compile and post a list of Knoxville-area convenience (or other) stores that carry Mountain Dew slushies.

First, it should be noted that The Award for Highest Achievement in Mountain Dew Slushies goes to Weigel’s at Emory Road@Dry Gap for their Code Red slushie.

This list so far:

  1. Weigel’s at Pellissippi@Westland
  2. Weigel’s at Middlebrook@Mars Hill (or whatever it’s called now, behind Wal-Mart@Walker Springs)
  3. Weigel’s at Middlebrook@Cedar Bluff
  4. Weigel’s at Northshore@Morrell
  5. Weigel’s at Pellissippi@Topside
  6. Weigel’s at Emory Road@Dry Gap Pike
  7. Weigel’s at Campbell Station@Walgreens, according to the Turpin Family
  8. Weigel’s at Oak Ridge Hwy@Beaver Ridge (across from another Walgreens), according to Nathan F.
  9. Texaco/Mr. Gas on 411 in Maryville
  10. Kenjo/BP Market on Maryville Pike according to Cas Volker Goodman

For you South Knoxvillians, Wes T. provides the following top-notch information:

While not in Knoxville per se, I’ve always found that the Blount County KenJo Markets have Mountain Dew Slushies that are vastly superior to ones I’ve tried elsewhere, including the Weigels at Topside Road and Pellissippi. I believe the best ones are at the KenJo on 411 just south of Maryville. However, there are 2 markets on Alcoa Highway one on the motor mile and one just south of Green Acres Flea Market. Both of them serve up fine Mountain Dew Slushies. For a sweeter and denser slushie (less air in the mix) try the KenJo on Montvale Road near Maryville College. As a sidebar, many of the markets offer an assortment of slushies that include Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Orange Slice, and Mountain Dew Code Red. While I don’t care for the liquid version of Code Red, the frozen version is a nice change of pace. Both Alcoa Highway markets only have 2 varieties each, while the 411, Montvale Road, and Sevierville Road markets have 4 barrel machines.

If you know of any other locations, please email them to Bjorn (remove “nospam.” from the address before sending). They seem to be at a lot of Weigel’s, but they aren’t at all of them for sure.

Update: Wes Carruthers, Vice President of KenJo Markets, was kind enough to provide the following information to us on 16 December 2004:

We take great pride in serving a quality frozen drink and certainly appreciate Wes T’s comments complimenting our efforts in providing a great frozen Mountain Dew. We currently have Frozen Mountain Dew in 24 of our 34 locations. I have attached a list. We have served Frozen Mountain Dew in our Blount County and Loudon County locations for many years. A little over a year ago we purchased 8 stores in Knoxville from BP Corporation. Most of these stores are much smaller in square footage, making it more difficult to fit these machines in. However, I just wanted to let you know that we are in the process of trying to work these machines into more of our Knoxville locations. For example, we intend to have a machine in KenJo # 31 at Chapman and Woodlawn within the next 60 days.
