Sunsphere scheduled for demolition

Posted on July 10, 2002 by Bjorn Knoxley

Knoxville’s not-yet historic semi-landmark the Sunsphere is scheduled to be demolished later this summer to make way for some Victorian houses. These houses were displaced when Fort Kid was expanded to make room for a new system of monkey bars. A Fort Kid representative told reporters that the monkey bars are made of a unique titanium alloy, and were finished in a special shade of red designed to blend in with Knoxville’s art district. The color was selected by a designer from Chattanooga, who recently helped paint a house on Beale Street in Memphis. By a vote of 30-1, Knoxville’s K2K email group decided to go ahead with demolition of the Sunsphere to save the houses. K2K is a thinktank group made up of community leaders, Metro Pulse readers, and a Republican.
