KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee said this week that securing a sitting president is, procedurally speaking, more straightforward than securing a free outdoor DJ show, after a Secret Service-screened, gate-by-gate operation at Neyland Stadium succeeded without incident four days after a rented perimeter fence at Fraternity Park gave way under roughly 10,000 people.
Thursday’s Chainsmokers show, a free campus event tied to Greek-life philanthropy week, was called off mid-afternoon when the crowd outgrew the venue’s 4-foot vinyl corral fencing, rented from an outside events company for the week. Saturday’s operation for President Trump’s visit — a full perimeter, screening at every stadium gate, stacked on top of the existing clear-bag policy — closed out with no comparable failure. Texas won 20-17. The president left during the fourth quarter.
“We can absolutely secure a president,” said UT Police Capt. Dale Tarwater. “A president has a motorcade, a schedule, and people whose entire job is knowing where he’s going to be. A free show announced on Instagram two days out does not have that.”
Asked whether the department had considered the same fencing vendor for both events, Tarwater said the comparison “isn’t really apples to apples,” noting the Neyland perimeter uses steel bike-rack barricade sections bolted at the base, while Fraternity Park’s fencing was “more of a suggestion.”
UT Athletics associate director Cheryl Maddux, who keeps the department’s Tripp Umbach economic-impact study — the one crediting Tennessee Athletics with $1.15 billion in statewide impact — in the same drawer as the Fraternity Park incident report, said the two documents “aren’t really speaking to each other yet.” She declined to say whether the fence itself had been assigned a dollar figure.
No injuries were reported at Fraternity Park. The fencing has not been returned to the vendor.
